FICTION FRIDAY: "EIGHT KEYS" by Suzanne LaFleur

With a variety of covers,  this book was reviewed in our Scholastic Book Fair.  I showed a movie clip of it to the students and it is intriguing for sure.  The target audience is 9-13 year old girls, but boys could read it as well.  The protagonist, Elise, finds clues about herself and her family that she didn't understand before, as she is able to unlock all 8 doors and see each gift her father left for her.  She is struggling in school, her locker partner treating her poorly and she just doesn't fit in.  It is a bit emotional, funny, mysterious and a part self-discovery.  Here are some other helpful reviews from other readers.  (The kids at my school are all dying to get their turn to read it since they saw the trailer from Scholastic.  I think I need to get a few more copies this weekend.)

5.0 out of 5 stars Eight Keys to Discovery June 3, 2012
Format:Hardcover

I am a homeschooling mom and this was one of the books I selected for my 10 and 11 year old daughters. This book isn't intended to be a mystery, but a journey into self discovery. Each key helps Elise learn something about herself or her family. As I was reading and writing comprehension questions I would frequently find myself laughing or crying. I think when my daughters read this and we discuss each of the rooms she opens they will also learn something about themselves.

5.0 out of 5 stars I highly recommend this for an eleven year old girl October 26, 2011

Precociously delightful
Category: Light adventure
Age Range: 10 - 11 years (the year before middle school)
Grade (Public school): the year before middle school or junior high school)
Preferred Gender: Boys and Girls (maybe slightly tilted to girls)

Elise lives with her Aunt Bessie and Uncle Hugh. Her Mother and Father are dead.
Elise's mother died at child birth or shortly thereafter. Franklin (Frank) is Elise's next door neighbor, almost the only neighbor (they live out in the country) and her best friend. Don't worry about this being too maudlin for a child to handle. I had to go back and reread the reason for Elise's Dad dying. All it says is the doctor told him he had three years to live. He wrote out a number of letters which he gave to Uncle Hugh. I was concerned that all this death might have been somewhat difficult to swallow. It turns out to be just the opposite. Elise has such a nice group of parent substitutes; your child might regret not having the same.
Elise is s clearly the protagonist. Frank is a strong sidekick. Amanda, Elise's locker-mate, is the antagonist.
Elise's Dad, who is dead, made out birthday letters to Elise, one for each of her birthdays. Elise's uncle gives her one at the end of the day on her birthdays.
Elise discovers eight locked doors on the second floor of the barn. Slowly she acquires the keys to each door.
Her father had placed special stuff in each room. You'll have to read the book to find out what Elise found.

I highly recommend this for an eleven year old girl.

SUNDAY: A Book List of Inspirational Titles for Kids

After spending some time searching the web, it seems that there are many, many beautifully written and illustrated inspirational books.  Here is one Principal and librarian's favorite list of books they have chose to include in their school library.  Many of the authors, including Wayne Dyer, Desmond Tutu and Echhart Tolle are best selling and inspirational authors for adults.  I have read many of their books for adults.  Some of the children's books below I have read and some I haven't, but I am very impressed with the reviews and it seems that I need to get a few more of these titles in my school library!!!

Following in the footsteps of Dr. Wayne Dyer’s first children’s book, the bestseller Incredible You! this work goes even further toward expressing Wayne’s positive message for children. In Unstoppable Me! Dr. Dyer teaches children how to hold on to the no-limit thinking he believes they were born with, rather than just trying to “fit in.” In doing so, they can learn to truly enjoy life and become unstoppable as they strive to attain their dreams.
The 10 important lessons in this book include the value of taking risks, dealing with stress and anxiety, and learning to enjoy each moment. Each point includes an example showing how a child might apply the concept in his or her everyday life. Similar to Incredible You! there are questions at the end of the book to help spark discussion and to further reinforce Wayne’s message.

For the first time ever, bestselling author Eckhart Tolle brings the core of his teachings to children, ages 7 to 100. Beautifully illustrated and artfully expressed, this charming story will bring joy to children and their parents for decades to come.
Milton, who is about eight years old, is experiencing bullying on the school playground at the hands of a boy named Carter.
Because he is being picked on, Milton no longer enjoys going to school. In fact, he dreads each morning because of his fear of Carter.
By discovering the difference between Then, When, and the Now, Milton is able to shed his fear of being bullied. Living in the Now, he no longer dreads encountering Carter—and this changes everything.
Milton's Secret will not only appeal to the millions of adult readers of Tolle's other books, but also to any parent who wants to introduce their children to the core of Tolle's teachings: Living in the Now is the quickest path to ending fear and suffering.

As a recently retired teacher of young children, I've already purchased 2 copies of this book, recommended it to all of my teacher friends, other friends, my school, my local libraries, and I even sent a copy to my last year's penpal class in Germany!!! The beautiful and brilliant colors of the artwork simply leap out and amaze you. Every single page is full of the artistically intricate details that children treasure and use for inspiration in their own creations. When I saw that THREE CUPS OF TEA was "translated" into the universal language of art and kid-speak, it was so exciting, because how many picture books translate the beauty of family life in the Middle East into something that Westerners will appreciate and love? Both Mortenson and Roth demonstrate courage and respect, both to the kids of Korphe and to their readers, as they use just the right words and the thoroughly engaging artwork to enable American kids to "befriend" through literatuare kids who happen to live in a war-torn region. This book is a gift; it will do for American minds what Pennies for Peace does for the Central Asia Institute's schools: Creat a better world through education! Teachers, librarians, parents - you might be grownups, but you will cherish this story too. I wish I could give this book 100 stars!

The subhead is "The story of Dr. Greg and Three Cups of Tea," and so it is. This is a child's picture book that tells the inspirational true story of Greg Mortenson and his tireless efforts to build schools in Pakistan and Afghanistan. Mortenson's book about the experience, Three Cups of Tea, is a worldwide bestseller. Since the topic is about kids, this picture book and the newly published Three Cups of Tea: The Young Reader's Edition, should resonate with children.

In 1993, Mortenson got lost in the mountains of Pakistan after turning back from a failed attempt at climbing K2. He stumbled into Korphe, a poor village, where the townspeople nursed him back to health. As he was recuperating, Mortenson was shocked to learn the village's children had no school, with lessons taught outside just three days a week. Kids learned to write using sticks in the dirt. To repay the village's kindness, the Montana native promised to return, and help build a school.

Mortenson did come back to Korphe, and has indeed helped build not just one but fifty-five schools -- many for girls -- in the impoverished region.

The idea of "three cups of tea" comes from the village chief, Haji Ali. "With the first cup of tea you are a stranger, with the second you become a friend, and with the third, you join our family."

Even if I wasn't drawn in by the story, I'd be tempted to buy Listen to the Wind just for the artwork. Artist Susan L. Roth used a variety of materials to create the colorful collages on each page. An artist's note in the back explains that Roth was inspired by actual artifacts from the region, in which nothing ever goes to waste. A woman's hat was "like a sculpture of cloth fragments, bright colored yarn and metal accents," including an actual computer chip.

Also in the back are photo-filled scrapbook pages, showing the completed school and Korphe villagers.

A story like this should help kids feel closer to children in other parts of the world, as if they had actually shared that third cup of tea.

Book Description

August 26, 2008
With warmth and humor, Archbishop Desmond Tutu distills his philosophy of unity and forgiveness into a picture book for the very young.

Archbishop Desmond Tutu has a vision of God's dream, which he shares here with the youngest of listeners. It involves people who reach out and hold each other's hands, but sometimes get angry and hurt each other — and say they're sorry and forgive. It's a wish that everyone will see they are brothers and sisters, no matter their way of speaking to God, no matter the size of their nose or the shade of their skin. Aided by vibrant artwork evoking such images as a rainbow and a sharing circle, Tutu offers the essence of his ubuntu philosophy, a wisdom so clear and crystalline that even the smallest child can understand.
