"The Walk" by Richard Paul Evans

"The Walk" is the first book in a series of at least 5 books that Richard Paul Evan has written.  I say at least 5 because the fifth one comes out next month and I'm not sure if it is the last one or not.  Basically, a man by the name of Alan loses almost everything in his life when his wife is bucked off of a horse and dies and as he is at his wife's bedside for five weeks, his business partner steals the company out from under his nose.  When Alan "comes to", his home is being sold, his cars are being repossessed and he is left with no family and no worldly assets.  So he begins to walk from one end of the country to the other.  This is a story of all that happens to him as he makes that journey.  It is intriguing and genuinely inspiring.  I highly recommend this book and series to anyone, including older teens and young adults.

One quote I love from the series says:

“We can spend our days bemoaning our losses, or we can grow from them. Ultimately the choice is ours. We can be victims of circumstance or masters of our own fate, but make no mistake, we cannot be both. The Walk - Epilogue Page 288” ― Richard Paul Evans

'Once there was a tree...and she loved a little boy.'
So begins a story of unforgettable perception, beautifully written and illustrated by the gifted and versatile Shel Silverstein.
Every day the boy would come to the tree to eat her apples, swing from her branches, or slide down her trunk...and the tree was happy. But as the boy grew older he began to want more from the tree, and the tree gave and gave and gave.
This is a tender story, touched with sadness, aglow with consolation. Shel Silverstein has created a moving parable for readers of all ages that offers an affecting interpretation of the gift of giving and a serene acceptance of another's capacity to love in return.

Sunday's Inspirational Book: "Hands Around the Library: Protecting Egypt's Treasured Books" (a Great Read Aloud for the First Week of Library)

Teachers should remind students and parents (and maybe other educators) of the importance of libraries, as schools get into full swing. Every classroom activity can be enriched by these rich resources.  All that's needed is a library card. September is National Library Card Sign-up Month.  Other countries recognize their importance as well.  You may remember reports last year about how Egyptian youth protected the Bibliotheca Alexandrina (Alexandria Library).   This extraordinary event has been translated into a beautiful, enriching, and informative picture book for children as  six but rich enough to be used with even 5th graders.  Hands Around the Library: Protecting Egypt's Treasured Books (Dial) by Susan Roth and Karen Leggett Abouraya conveys a child's sense of history as it opens: "Once upon a time, not a long time ago, people in Egypt were sad and sometimes angry because…"  The voice of a young narrator successfully conveys a healthy admiration for the library's treasures. She says, "We were free inside the library even when we were not free outside."

And so a human chain protects the library and its gems from unpredictable protesters.    Actual photographs of the library and the people — including the narrator and the library director — both of whom figure prominently in the telling — add to the real-life drama.  A brief note about the 2011 revolution, notes about Alexandria's library ancient and modern,  and more conclude this compelling book.  Hands Around the Library provides a look at a timely topic, a rich cultural heritage, and much more.  It's also a fascinating way to celebrate libraries and their treasures long beyond September.

What an incredible way to start the year out with older students, by celebrating our freedom to have libraries and so many other freedoms that others don't have.  A great topic for discussion.

SUNDAY INSPIRATION: by Wayne Dyer

Incredible You! 10 Ways to let your greatness shine through[Hardcover]

Dr. Wayne W. Dyer (Author), Kristina Tracy (Author), Melanie Siegel (Illustrator)

Book Description

December 1, 2005 4 and upP and up
Dr Wayne W. Dyer has taken then 10 concepts from his book for adults "10 Secrets for Success & Inner Peace" and interpreted them for children, creating "Incredible You"! Wayne believes that it's never too early for children to know that they're unique and powerful beings, and they have everything they need within themselves to create happy, successful lives. With this book, parents can introduce these important ideas to their children. The ten concepts are numbered, titled and set in rhyming verse, and vibrant illustrations bring each point to life. At the end, there are questions that kids can answer to connect these ideas to their own lives, and make them realize how incredible they truly are.

Another book reviewer wrote:

"It is my desire to have these tiny precious souls-so many of whom have brought so much joy into my life as they listened to my stories-close this book and feel so good about themselves that they feel in their hearts that nothing is impossible for them. It would be even more thrilling for me if this becomes the book they choose each night...so that a special person-like you-can read it to them over and over again." - From the introduction

Renowned author Wayne Dyer has distilled his 10 Secrets for Success and Inner Peace into a children's book titled Incredible You! 10 Ways to Let Your Greatness Shine Through. Co-written with Kristina Tracy and illustrated by Melanie Siegel, this colorful uplifting book affirms and encourages children to imagine, explore, and expect beauty in all its forms.

The 10 Ways to Let Your Greatness Shine Through are:

1. Share the Good

2. Find What You Love

3. You are Filled with Love

4. Find a Quiet Place Inside

5. Make Today Great!

6. Change Your Thoughts to Good

7. Take Care of Yourself

8. Picture What You Want

9. Everyone Is Special, Especially You

10. Good Thoughts Give You Energy

This wonderful book isn't saccharine "just think happy thoughts". Dyer addresses challenges such as ridicule. Under #7 Take Care of Yourself it says:

"If something or someone makes you feel bad,

don't let it ruin your day by making you sad.

Let go of the hurt and take care of you.

You can't control what others say or do."

The first picture shows two girls whispering and laughing at a third girl, while the second picture shows the girl happily playing in her room as the other two look through the window. She has chosen to play with her toys and enjoy herself-by herself.

Incredible You! contains sage advice for both children and adults. At the end of the book are ten questions designed to encourage children to ponder the ideas presented therein. For example, one question is "It's important to make time for the things you love. Do you have a passion? Something you love to do more than anything else?"

My son answers "play with trains!" to this one. He really enjoyed it when I read the story to him and asked him the questions in the back. In fact, I had this book among a pile of others that I was going to review. He purposefully walked over the stack one day and removed this book so he could look at it on his own! I've reviewed quite a few children's books and he's never done this before. So my 7 year old gives Incredible You! an enthusiastic thumbs up, as does his Mom!

After reading a number of reviews, I'm planning on purchasing all of his children's books for our school library.  I love these self-improvement books for kids.  What better time to start learning lifelong skill than when you are really young!!!! --Laura

Following in the footsteps of Dr. Wayne Dyer’s first children’s book, the bestseller Incredible You! this work goes even further toward expressing Wayne’s positive message for children. In Unstoppable Me! Dr. Dyer teaches children how to hold on to the no-limit thinking he believes they were born with, rather than just trying to “fit in.” In doing so, they can learn to truly enjoy life and become unstoppable as they strive to attain their dreams.
The 10 important lessons in this book include the value of taking risks, dealing with stress and anxiety, and learning to enjoy each moment. Each point includes an example showing how a child might apply the concept in his or her everyday life. Similar to Incredible You! there are questions at the end of the book to help spark discussion and to further reinforce Wayne’s message.

For the first time ever, bestselling author Eckhart Tolle brings the core of his teachings to children, ages 7 to 100. Beautifully illustrated and artfully expressed, this charming story will bring joy to children and their parents for decades to come.
Milton, who is about eight years old, is experiencing bullying on the school playground at the hands of a boy named Carter.
Because he is being picked on, Milton no longer enjoys going to school. In fact, he dreads each morning because of his fear of Carter.
By discovering the difference between Then, When, and the Now, Milton is able to shed his fear of being bullied. Living in the Now, he no longer dreads encountering Carter—and this changes everything.
Milton's Secret will not only appeal to the millions of adult readers of Tolle's other books, but also to any parent who wants to introduce their children to the core of Tolle's teachings: Living in the Now is the quickest path to ending fear and suffering.

Format:Hardcover
As a recently retired teacher of young children, I've already purchased 2 copies of this book, recommended it to all of my teacher friends, other friends, my school, my local libraries, and I even sent a copy to my last year's penpal class in Germany!!! The beautiful and brilliant colors of the artwork simply leap out and amaze you. Every single page is full of the artistically intricate details that children treasure and use for inspiration in their own creations. When I saw that THREE CUPS OF TEA was "translated" into the universal language of art and kid-speak, it was so exciting, because how many picture books translate the beauty of family life in the Middle East into something that Westerners will appreciate and love? Both Mortenson and Roth demonstrate courage and respect, both to the kids of Korphe and to their readers, as they use just the right words and the thoroughly engaging artwork to enable American kids to "befriend" through literatuare kids who happen to live in a war-torn region. This book is a gift; it will do for American minds what Pennies for Peace does for the Central Asia Institute's schools: Creat a better world through education! Teachers, librarians, parents - you might be grownups, but you will cherish this story too. I wish I could give this book 100 stars!

The subhead is "The story of Dr. Greg and Three Cups of Tea," and so it is. This is a child's picture book that tells the inspirational true story of Greg Mortenson and his tireless efforts to build schools in Pakistan and Afghanistan. Mortenson's book about the experience, Three Cups of Tea, is a worldwide bestseller. Since the topic is about kids, this picture book and the newly published Three Cups of Tea: The Young Reader's Edition, should resonate with children.

In 1993, Mortenson got lost in the mountains of Pakistan after turning back from a failed attempt at climbing K2. He stumbled into Korphe, a poor village, where the townspeople nursed him back to health. As he was recuperating, Mortenson was shocked to learn the village's children had no school, with lessons taught outside just three days a week. Kids learned to write using sticks in the dirt. To repay the village's kindness, the Montana native promised to return, and help build a school.

Mortenson did come back to Korphe, and has indeed helped build not just one but fifty-five schools -- many for girls -- in the impoverished region.

The idea of "three cups of tea" comes from the village chief, Haji Ali. "With the first cup of tea you are a stranger, with the second you become a friend, and with the third, you join our family."

Even if I wasn't drawn in by the story, I'd be tempted to buy Listen to the Wind just for the artwork. Artist Susan L. Roth used a variety of materials to create the colorful collages on each page. An artist's note in the back explains that Roth was inspired by actual artifacts from the region, in which nothing ever goes to waste. A woman's hat was "like a sculpture of cloth fragments, bright colored yarn and metal accents," including an actual computer chip.

Also in the back are photo-filled scrapbook pages, showing the completed school and Korphe villagers.

A story like this should help kids feel closer to children in other parts of the world, as if they had actually shared that third cup of tea.

Book Description

August 26, 2008
With warmth and humor, Archbishop Desmond Tutu distills his philosophy of unity and forgiveness into a picture book for the very young.

Archbishop Desmond Tutu has a vision of God's dream, which he shares here with the youngest of listeners. It involves people who reach out and hold each other's hands, but sometimes get angry and hurt each other — and say they're sorry and forgive. It's a wish that everyone will see they are brothers and sisters, no matter their way of speaking to God, no matter the size of their nose or the shade of their skin. Aided by vibrant artwork evoking such images as a rainbow and a sharing circle, Tutu offers the essence of his ubuntu philosophy, a wisdom so clear and crystalline that even the smallest child can understand.
