TUESDAY'S TEACHING THE BOOK: "Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus" by Mo Willems

Here are some great books and lesson plan ideas for Children's Book Week!!!

Explore the author, Mo Willems with your class. Right now his book "The Duckling Gets a Cookie" is number one on the New York Time's Picture Books List.  Students can read this book or others written by him then compare and contrast the characters from other books and the characters with themselves. In the end, they will summarize the story in their own words recalling the key details and characters from the story.  Have them do a 30 second book talk!  Share with the whole class or partner share!

Students listen to books written by Mo Willems, such as Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus and discuss the story elements of each.  Who is the main character, plot, setting, author's purpose, theme???  In this reading strategies lesson, students decide after reading through the whole series of books, what their favorite book is and why.

Students discover writing strategies authors use to enhance characters.  In this character writing lesson, students are read the Knuffle Bunny books by Mo Willems and analyze the story, characters and settings as they listen.  Students write about a real person they know and describe him or her as though they are a fictional story character.
